Love is in the air, friends!

February 14th is right around the corner and I’ve had a blast making a variety of Valentines Day dessert ideas like this Valentine snack board and these Valentine chocolates.

Recently, I’ve been experimenting with easy cakes and this cake is additional proof that you don’t need to be an expert in the cake decorating department to make a cute cake for any holiday (more proof here and here).

Note about icing: This Wilton cookie icing is not a substitute for the Wilton decorating icing linked above. The cookie icing is a much thinner consistency than the decorating icing, and is best suited for cookies.

How To Make A Valentines Day Cake

Step 1: Bake The Cake

First, bake the cake in a 9×13 cake pan according to the instructions on the box.

Let the cake cool completely on a wire rack before transferring it to a serving tray.

Valentine Chocolate Cake Steps: Apply Vanilla Frosting

Step 2: Frost & Decorate The Cake

Once the cake has cooled completely, apply a crumb coat.

A crumb coat will ensure no chocolate crumbs appear in the white frosting.

Then, chill the cake for 30 minutes.

Next, apply another coat of vanilla frosting.

Lastly, decorate the cake by adding red and pink hearts around the cake.

Notes

Frosting & Decorating Time = includes the 30 minutes to chill the cake after applying a crumb coat. It's important to chill the cake so that that the crumb coats can truly 'lock in' the crumbs.
Cook Time = 30 minutes is an approximation. This may vary slightly, depending on the cake mix that you use.
